Jagriti Innovations had built ThalCare, a thalassemia management system for Sankalp India Foundation for managing patients with a genetic blood disorder. The system had been in use in Indira Gandhi Institute of Child Health, a premier organization promoting tertiary level Child Health Care services in Bangalore where over 200 kids with Thalassemia are registered.
Sometime during May, 2013 we heard about the Novartis Thalassemia App Challenge. Sensing the opportunity we immediately applied. Based on the design for the app, we were selected in the 5 finalists for implementing the Thalassemia App.
It gives us immense pleasure to announce that our Thalassemia App was adjudged the Second Runner Up in the Novartis Thalassemia App Challenge
Team Jagriti had been busy for last 3 months after been selected as the finalists for the Thalassemia App. With no App development experience, the team was quickly able to quickly learn and build the app in a matter of 3 months. Kudos.
The Challenge:
Thalassemia patients face daily challenges in managing their disease. There is a critical need to develop an app solution, which minimizes the hassle of daily disease management. Novartis challenges the teams to develop an innovative smartphone/iPad application that increases Thalassemia patients’ (as well as the caretakers’) ability to manage the disease effectively (including monitoring/tracking of key parameters, treatment/medication adherence and recording of daily personal facts, which help patients live active lives despite their condition). Thalassemia patients live all around the world which means that teams need to consider multi-cultural differences in order to create an exceptional user experience. There are a number of disease management and adherence applications available in the market today, but many are just scratching the surface as to what is possible. As a result, we are looking for teams to be BOLD and INNOVATIVE in developing this solution. This includes building unique features and functionalities that:
- Motivate, inspire and reinforce positive behaviors related to adherence in order to reach treatment goals
- Enable patients to set and track goals - patients motivated by gaming features, receiving “awards”/incentives, receiving daily inspiration quotes and etc.
- Provide users ability to share information and collaborate with others (most importantly with HCPs and also with caregiver, friends) via opt-in and password protection features
- Educate, entertain and keep patient up to date on lifestyle and disease management topics
We are thankful to Novartis for the opportunity.
